Feel Better with Fall Decluttering

Decluttering is an important exercise for you and your home. Decluttering is so important, in fact, that you should do it seasonally. As the seasons change, consider taking some time to go through your belongings and sort through those seasonal items you no longer need, and those seldom-used items that you can live without.

Three Reasons You Should Declutter

According to experts, it’s worth it to invest the time in decluttering and getting organized for the following reasons:

1. Stress

Studies show that cortisol levels increase when people walk into a cluttered room. Women are especially prone to react to clutter with a spike in cortisol, which is your stress hormone. This could be because the brain sees a cluttered environment and thinks “work.” Consciously or unconsciously, a cluttered environment signals to your brain that there’s work to be done.

So, the best way to alleviate this stress and relax, is to declutter!

2. Focus

The Princeton Institute of Neuroscience has found that the brain has trouble figuring out what is clutter and what is important, so much so that a cluttered desk or workspace can be paralyzing as you try to figure out what to do next.

3. Time

When your space is disorganized and cluttered, you’ll waste time looking for things when you need them. You might not realize that decluttering means you can clean your home faster. The National Soap and Detergent Association found that removing clutter reduces time spent cleaning by 40%!

Three Decluttering Tips

When it comes to decluttering, most of us want to do it, but don’t know how. If you think that decluttering means spending a beautiful fall day indoors, sorting through your closets and cupboards, think again. Here are some fast, easy ways to declutter quickly over time:

1. Start small

Spend five solid minutes a day, every day decluttering a small area of your home – like one drawer in your kitchen or bathroom – and you’ll have made some serious progress before you know it.

2. Be generous

Considering giving away one item a week that you no longer use, and you’ll find your home is clutter-free and your heart is full.

3. The Hanger Trick

Hang all your clothes in your closet with the hangers facing in the opposite direction. When you wear a piece of clothing, return it with the hanger facing the normal direction. After six months, you can quickly see which clothes you have never worn, and should, therefore remove.

Of course, as you’re decluttering you may find some items that you can’t part with. Maybe they’ve got sentimental value, or maybe they’re seasonal items (like skis or camping equipment) that take up a lot of room. Put these items aside for your next trip to your storage unit.
